"Talking to Others about God"
Ignatian Spirituality
You are all familiar with this favorite phrase of Pope John Paul’s that has become one of my own favorites. It is the perfect, simple prayer. In nine short letters and three syllables, the essence of our relationship with God is all there.
This Latin phrase literally translates to “I am all yours”. It is easy and customary to think of this, correctly, as a prayer of conscious commitment of one’s entire life to God. However, it can also be thought of as a simple statement of fact. Literally, we are all God’s. He created us and the entire universe which we inhabit.
We are actually “part” of God . . . part of God’s work of creation. We are each a true spark of our Creator and, as such, our lives and our creation are an extension of God’s one single work which is creation.
As such, we are God’s. We are of God. We are created in God’s image and likeness. We find and we live out our true humanity in being and doing that for which we have been created. Our humanity, then, with all of its imperfections, is a perfect expression of God’s love and creation in the world. If we really understand that we are “all God’s”, we can reflect on this as the basis of our lives and our humanity throughout each day.
As “God’s”, we are never truly alone. As “God’s”, we are always constantly, totally and completely loved. As “God’s”, we are also connected to each other and to all of creation in a profound way and this can inform and guide our decisions and help us to grow in our humanity.
Maybe this can be our prayer and reflection throughout each day.
